Maple Bay

The pretty seaside community of Maple Bay, located in a narrow inlet and surrounded by smooth, pebbled beaches, has a fine natural harbour that hosts marine activity all year long. Located on Vancouver Island, Maple Bay is situated across from the largest Southern Gulf Island, Salt Spring Island.

Arts and Culture

Don’t miss the Maple Bay Marina, in Bird’s Eye Cove at the extreme south end of Maple Bay, which features a chandlery, restaurant and pub.

Day trips in the area may include a visit to the nearby village of Genoa Bay, a collection of waterside homes with a full-service marina, art gallery and restaurant. Or travel 10 minutes from Maple Bay to Duncan, the City of Totems, and home of the Quw'utsun' Cultural & Conference Centre. Nearby Crofton also provides ferry service to Vesuvius Bay on Salt Spring Island where art galleries and craft studios are plentiful.

Outdoor Adventure

Diving, kayaking, swimming and fishing—there are plenty of sea activities to enjoy here…The beach in Maple Bay is a great place to swim and beachcomb. You can also dive in the protected narrow inlet–the late Jacques Costeau considered it one of his favourite diving spots. To fish for salmon, sea bass and cod, set out into the Sansum Narrows and Maple. Great fishing spots are Arbutus Point and Octupus Point.

Getting to Maple Bay

Maple Bay is located in the Cowichan Valley, only a 10-minute drive from Duncan.

  • By Vehicle: Take the Island Highway and watch for the signs!
  • By Boat: The Maple Bay Marina, located off Samsun Narrows, offers protected moorage.
Quamichan Lake, 3km west of Maple Bay, also offers year-round fishing. Access the popular lake is from Maple Bay Road, via Trunk Road to Indian Road.

For panoramic views, walk the trails in Maple Mountain Centennial Park. The park offers a wide range of trails that range from 70 to 140 minutes in length. For more hiking, visit the 536-metre high Mount Tzouhalem (south of Maple Bay toward Genoa Bay) and enjoy wildflowers and lovely views.
