Most of the population of about 77,000 lives along the east coast in lush farming areas and lovely seaside communities. A few of the towns and cities within the Cowichan Valley are:
|
|
- Chemainus: A former coastal mill town, Chemainus has transformed itself into the world's largest outdoor art gallery with its famous murals.
- Cobble Hill: A tiny farming village, Cobble Hill is a creative community—visit galleries run by local artists, including painters, sculptors, potters and totem pole
carvers.
- Cowichan Bay: Cowichan Bay is a unique, historic seaside village on southern Vancouver Island that is home to artists, craftspeople and local food producers, including some fine local wineries and eateries.
- Crofton: Surrounded by hillsides and mountains, Crofton is located on Osborne Bay and has great views of
Salt Spring Island, which is a short ferry ride away.
- Duncan: Known as the City of Totems, Duncan has many hand-carved cedar totem poles located in parks and on downtown streets.
- Ladysmith: Named in April 2000 by Harrowsmith Country Life magazine as one of the "10 Prettiest Towns in Canada,” Ladysmith is perched on the hillside overlooking Ladysmith
Harbour.
- Maple Bay: The pretty seaside community of Maple Bay, located in a narrow inlet and surrounded by smooth, pebbled beaches, has a fine natural harbour that hosts marine activity all year long.
- Mill Bay: Located at the south end of the Cowichan Valley, travellers on the Island Highway can stop in at Mill Bay and enjoy the village's quiet waterfront streets and wonderful Gulf Island views.
- Shawnigan Lake: The Shawnigan Lake area, midway between Victoria and Duncan, has been a popular vacation spot for years.
